College Essay Coaching for High-Achieving Students
For serious students applying to selective colleges, the most challenging part of the application is often the college essays.
Students spend years building their grades, activities, and test scores. But the college essay is the one part of the application still under your control — and it shapes how everything else is interpreted.
Through my college essay coaching, I help students uncover and articulate stories that give their applications depth and coherence — especially in the Common App personal statement and supplemental essays.
I offer a free 20-minute consultation and respond personally to every inquiry.
My Approach
When I began working with students on their college essays in 2015, I was struck by how much of the advice online relied on gimmicks and formulas that made essays sound interchangeable. More recently, students have turned to AI to draft their essays, unaware that admissions officers can quickly recognize writing that lacks genuine reflection.
I wanted to create something different: a careful process grounded in genuine engagement with each student.
Instead of generic brainstorming exercises, I pay close attention to how students think through their experiences. When students feel respected and taken seriously, they open up — and eventually, something authentic begins to emerge.
In our early sessions, I ask many questions and push for specificity. The process can feel demanding at first. But there is always a moment when a student recognizes a story that genuinely matters to them. That is where the real essay begins.
I then provide a set of personalized questions for students to reflect on between sessions. These questions break the work into manageable parts and reduce the pressure to produce something perfect right away. Often, the material students write casually or experimentally becomes the most powerful part of the final essay.
If this approach resonates with you, I would be glad to speak further.
What Students Gain
Over the past decade, my students have been admitted to highly selective colleges across the country, including the Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, and the University of California system. More importantly, they have learned to approach the college essay with seriousness, reflection, and intellectual honesty.
Working together is not simply about polishing sentences. It is about learning to think carefully about your own experiences — what mattered, why it mattered, and how to communicate that clearly.
Students who engage fully in this process often leave with more than a strong personal statement. They develop sharper writing skills, greater self-awareness, and the confidence that comes from submitting an essay that genuinely represents them.
Every serious student has a story worth telling. If you are ready to articulate yours, I would be glad to speak with you.

How It Works
I founded Real College Essays to bring a more thoughtful approach to college essay coaching — one grounded in careful listening and serious reflection rather than formulas or shortcuts.
Over time, I’ve built a small team of highly credentialed coaches who share that same philosophy. All of our college essay tutors are published authors with doctoral degrees, and each works within the standards I’ve developed.
When students reach out for college essay help, we talk through their goals and match them with the coach best suited to their needs. Some families choose to work directly with me; others work with one of the coaches on my team. In every case, the approach remains the same.
Here is what that looks like in practice:
- One-on-one sessions with an experienced college essay coach focused on developing a personal statement that reflects who you genuinely are.
- Direct, honest feedback — if something isn’t working, we’ll say so clearly and help you strengthen it.
- A collaborative process. We don’t rewrite essays for students or edit behind the scenes. The work happens in conversation.
- Careful guidance on supplemental essays that show thoughtful fit with specific schools.
- A flexible structure. You pay only for the sessions you need; there are no required packages.
I personally take on a limited number of students each year. If you’d like to talk through what might make the most sense for you, I’d be glad to speak further.
About Me
I received my PhD from UC Berkeley, where I taught hundreds of students and supervised senior thesis projects. I was later elected as a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows, a position awarded to early-career scholars for independent research.
Before turning my focus to college essay coaching, I spent years teaching students how to think carefully, write clearly, and defend their ideas with precision. That training continues to shape the way I work today.
What I value most about this work is the moment a student realizes they have something real to say — something thoughtful, personal, and true. Helping students reach that point, and submit an essay they genuinely stand behind, never gets old.
If that sounds like the kind of support you’re looking for, I’d be glad to speak with you.
